Into the Field of Korean-German Cultural Exchange 🇰🇷🤝🇩🇪
Last week, I visited the National Museum of Korea, and the Korean Cultural Special Exhibition in collaboration with the Dresden Museum in Germany was truly impressive! I was curious about how Korean culture is introduced in Europe, and the exhibition arrangement was very meticulous.
In particular, the exhibition description I viewed in advance on the official website of the National Museum of Korea blended seamlessly with the actual exhibits. Seeing Joseon Dynasty white porcelain displayed alongside German ceramics made me profoundly appreciate the significance of cultural exchange!
According to the museum representatives, this exhibition commemorates the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. It will continue until next month, so I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t been yet! 🎯
Hot Issues in Islamic Culture Humanities Lectures ☪️
Currently, I’m following a program with great enthusiasm! The ‘AsIA Humanities Asset Lecture – Meeting Islam’ in collaboration with Seoul National University’s Asia Research Institute has reached its 5th session.
Last week, I attended a lecture titled ‘The Essence of Islamic Art,’ where I could vividly experience Middle Eastern culture, which I usually find difficult to encounter. The lecturer showcased beautiful photographs of Persian miniature artworks!
The program takes place every Thursday at 7 PM, and due to high demand, there are rumors that next month’s spots will close early… If you’re interested, make sure to apply quickly! 📚 You can find more details on the Seoul National University Asia Research Institute website.
The Glory of Museum Professionals: ‘Proud Museum Award’ 🏆
Recently, the 28th National Museum Professionals Conference was held at the National Museum of Korea, and the atmosphere was truly moving! Hearing the award speeches from those who have devoted their lives to the museum made me realize the preciousness of preserving cultural heritage.
Professor An Hwi-jun’s acceptance speech left a deep impression on me when he said, “The museum is a living space that connects the past and present.” I couldn’t help but applaud seeing the passionate individuals among the awardees 👏.
This event takes place every May, and I hope that next year, the general public can also attend. Why not take an interest in the stories of the people working in museums?
Hidden Charm Points of the National Museum of Korea 💎
While many visit just for the special exhibitions, the permanent exhibition halls are also rich in sights! I particularly enjoy the Goryeo Celadon Exhibition Hall, where the lighting angles enhance the beauty of the displayed works.
The outdoor garden at the back of the museum is a great place to take a break. On nice days, many visitors enjoy their lunch here while relaxing 🌳.
One tip: if you arrive at exactly 10 AM, you can attend a free guided tour by a curator! When I participated last time, it was enjoyable to hear behind-the-scenes stories about the artifacts I wasn’t aware of ㅎㅎ.
Must-Check Tips Before Visiting ✅
If it’s your first visit, there are a few important points to keep in mind! First, I highly recommend making an online reservation. On weekends, you might have to wait a long time to get tickets on-site ㅠㅠ.
Additionally, while photography without flash is allowed inside the museum, special exhibition areas might have different regulations, so be sure to check. A friend of mine got reprimanded for using a flash without knowing… 📸.
As for transportation, if you come out of exit 2 at Ichon Station on Line 4, it connects directly! The parking lot is usually full, making public transport the convenient option. Keep this in mind when you go! 🚇
Cultural Experience Growing with the Museum 🌱
After visiting the National Museum of Korea several times, I saw it as more than just an exhibition space; it is a living platform for cultural exchange. The presence of visitors from various age groups really showcases the continuation of culture.
Recently, children’s experience programs are also developing, and after seeing the ‘Museum Explorer’ program that my niece participated in, I was really impressed with its quality! Next month, there will also be special lectures for teens, so if you have children, make sure to apply! 🧒
Personally, I hope for an even wider variety of cultural programs in the future. What kind of experiences do you wish to have at the museum?

📜 Epilogue: A Special Day Found at the Museum
I wasn’t really a fan of museums originally due to the prejudice that they would be boring. However, a special lecture I unexpectedly attended at the National Museum of Korea last year completely changed my perspective!
The lecture I attended on ‘Science and Technology in Joseon’ was incredibly fascinating and eye-opening. I, who had never been interested in Eastern painting, am now collecting Korean traditional art pieces… The power of the museum is amazing, isn’t it? ㅎㅎ.
